I have a longer entry I want to write about Japan and Fest and all, but before that I want to share the news I just got...

I passed the JLPT N1!

I took the test in 2012 and narrowly missed, so I took it again last December. I felt much better about it this time (that is, I didn't want to baww into NOR or a pillow) and since it was a narrow miss last time, I hoped that a summer of study in Japan and a fair amount of reading/anime/reviewing would make the difference. Apparently it was enough!

For those that don't know, the JLPT is the Japanese Language Proficiency Test, and there are 5 ranks, with the 1 being the hardest. NOR took the 2 in 2012 and passed when I first took the 1. I've only taken the 1 (twice now) so I don't know about the other ranks, but for me, it was a grueling, super stressful 3 hour endeavor >_< It's broken into 3 sections: Kanji/Grammar, Reading, and Listening, and the Reading section was what got me the first time - even after taking multiple practice tests, I didn't expect there to be so much text to get through, and I didn't even get to the end of the questions. I still can't read as fast as I'd like, but I guess all that game playing and reading helped me out!

For now, back to work...though we'll be having some celebratory sushi this weekend! :D

Eevee Friends Figures?

Hey everyone! I've been pretty busy lately, but I'm just popping on here to see if any of you are interested in claiming some of the new Eevee Friends figures. I just bought a set on Sunyshore, but I only want the Jolteon.

Bandai Eevees Friends Figure Set

They are approximately Tomy MC size, which is a bit larger than I expected!

I don't have them on hand yet, but I'd like to take claims ahead of time so that I'll know what to expect when I get them in. No payment due until they arrive at my house, and shipping shouldn't be much as they're just small figures (whatever it usually costs to send a little figure from the US these days).

Eevee $6:
Espeon $8:
Sylveon $10:
Leafeon $10:
Flareon $10:
Umbreon $10:
Vaporeon $10:
Jolteon: Me!
Glaceon $6:
Pikachu $1:

Thanks guys! :)

PS: I'm a little behind on new Jolteon, so if you have any spare Jolteon items from recent sets, I'd be glad to arrange a trade or a straight buy!

Today's adventure

I was going to just post a photo or something on Twitter about this, but there's enough that I wanted to talk about it that it makes more sense to me to just make a full post!

Today, I went with my sister Lauren and her boyfriend Erick to Ueno Zoo. It was lots of fun! But that's not what this entry is about.

On the way back from Ueno, I had a derp moment and got us on the train going the wrong way. The train was a loop, so we'd get back eventually, and we had seats so none of us really cared that we were going to be on the train an extra 20-30 minutes. As the train went on, I noted that hey, Shinjuku is on this side. We were going to go there for the Capcom cafe on Saturday or Sunday, but they're open now and we're passing right by it, and we haven't eaten much recently, so why not stop by?

Dialga Pokedolls!

(no subject)

I don't usually post things like this but
I just cannot handle it!

Dialga Megalo Cannon Japanese TCG

Dialga Megalo Cannon Japanese TCG

I have been waiting for allll of Gen5 for a Dialga full art, after Giratina got one some time ago. And it's finally out, and it's so beautiful!!

There are several up on YJ right now, but the set juuuust came out - it might not even be officially out yet and those are just leaked ones - so I'm forcing myself to wait at least a few days, and snag some with BINs. The full art I will definitely be buying on YJ since it's a UR, but the EX I could probably get in some comm sales posts from people buying boxes, if it's not too rare?

The Pokemon I collect have gotten bunches of new cards, and my reaction is usually just "oh that's cute/cool! I'll have to pick it up eventually." I still haven't even bothered to get the 3dix shiny card yet. But seeing these Dialga reminds me of how exciting collecting should be! I can't wait to get them in hand, ooh over their glossiness in person, and get them added to my site...

Thanks to collectorviper for the info!

Lang 8 Post

Here's another post, about Christmas plans. It might sound a bit depressing but that really isn't how I mean it ^_^; And NOR, this is not supposed to make you feel guilty, so don't! As long as I get my pumpkin pie.

Plans for Christmas

Christmas is coming soon, isn't it? I don't really have any special plans, though.

When I was a kid/child, I really looked forward to Christmas. We'd put up a Christmas tree, decorate the house with Christmas themed things, and make lists of the presents we wanted. But now, there aren't any children in our family anymore (since we have grown up and none of us have our own children yet). Since adults generally buy things that they want themselves, it's hard to choose presents for them. Children can't even buy their own candy, so they're easily pleased with gifts.

Many people meet up with family for Christmas, but I live pretty far away from mine. I live closest to my sister, but even that requires a trip by plane. Since my family met up for Thanksgiving last month, it seems like everyone thinks "Well, we don't need to meet up this month too". Long trips cost money and require vacation time from work, so I guess it can't be helped.

My fiancee and I will probably spend some quiet time at home together (on Christmas). We'll play video games, watch a movie on the TV, and eat some pie. The villagers in Animal Crossing (US title) seem to be really excited about Christmas, so I'll probably play that too (since there were be special events for the holiday). It's a bit weird to be paying more attention to presents for game characters than real people, isn't it... Everyone in my family seems to have given up on exchanging Christmas presents with each other, so we don't do it anymore.

I've heard that Christmas Cake and Christmas Chicken are really popular in Japan, but we don't have either of those things here in America. But, you can hear Christmas music in nearly every store and home. Is Christmas music popular in Japan too?

Do you have any Christmas plans?

Sales Post Notice

This is a public announcement for anyone looking to buy from my sales!

My sales posts are now closed for the time being. I don't have time nowadays to keep the posts updated, add new ones, or reply to individual requests for items. This led to a bunch of requests on old posts that took me a long time to respond to, which was probably pretty frustrating for buyers, and stressed me out too! So, I am closing out those posts until I have more time to work with them.

You might notice some of my old posts are still visible, but those posts aren't open; I just have open transactions/trades/something going on in the comment threads there, and I don't want to block out replies from the people I'm working with. Once those are resolved, those posts will be closed until I can reopen them at a later date.

Thanks for all of your purchases with me! :)

Lang 8 and JLPT

Lately, I've been posting regularly to a site called Lang8. It's for learning languages, and the basic idea is that you write journal entries or posts in the language you're trying to learn, and native speakers of that language correct your mistakes for you. So, I write in Japanese and correct other people's entries in English. I started feeling a bit silly that I was writing regularly for Japanese people I don't really know, yet leaving my LJ that has my actual friends on it totally barren. So, I decided to start posting those entries here too. In the interest of saving time, I'm going to post the English-commented Japanese here rather than rewriting all of the entries to more normal English.

If you know Japanese, there's not really any need to correct me on these, as they have all been (or will shortly be) heavily corrected by Japanese people already, and the corrections would probably heavily overlap.

Below is the one I just finished writing. Under the cut are a bunch of previous entries.

The Japanese Language Proficiency Test

Yesterday, I took the Japanese Language Proficiency Test (JLPT).

I wasn't that interested in it myself, but my fiancee dragged me into it.

He took the N2 and I took the N1 (the top rank).

The tests were in the same building at the same time, but they were in different rooms.

For practice, we took 3 sample tests.

But, the real test ended up being a bit harder.

Just after I finished the kanji reading and grammar sections of my test, the person next to me folded his arms and laid down his head to sleep.

I was surprised, and thought "he's already done? He must be really fluent."

As I was working on the reading comprehension section, I kept getting distracted by his snoring (and had to reread the passages).

I thought about telling the proctors (the people administering the test) "Excuse me, but this person is distracting me," but the proctors kept passing us as they wandered the room (watching people take the test and making sure no one was cheating), and they didn't say anything to him at all.

I thought, "I guess they don't care if he's sleeping during the test."

There was also a rule prohibiting anyone from leaving the room before the test was over, even if they finished their own test, (so I felt bad about him having to sit and do nothing for half an hour while waiting for the test to be done).

I tried to do my best, but when there were only 5 minutes remaining, I still had 10 or 12 questions left.

Since there was nothing else I could do about it, I filled in the answers at random.

The guy sleeping next to me did bother me, but I know that the real problem was that I couldn't read Japanese fast enough to finish the test in time.

After that, there was a 30 minute break.

I tried to find my fiancee to vent my feelings about the first part of the test, but I couldn't find him.

Later, I learned that we'd been looking for each other on different floors.

After that, there was a listening comprehension section.

Well, at least he can't sleep during this part", I thought to myself.

Each question was played (from speakers) only once, and we had to choose the right answer.

I thought this section was also harder than the practice test, but I did my best.

Eventually, the end of the test that I'd been anxiously awaiting finally arrived. (I was wanting the test to be over, not waiting anxiously to be able to take the test.)

After I left the room, I quickly met up with my fiancee.

His test didn't go well either, but he consoled me.

He said things like, "we both did the best we could" and "it's okay if we don't pass." Once we felt better, we went out for a delicious meal of sushi to celebrate our efforts.

We won't know until February whether we passed or failed our tests.

Now I'll go back to studying Japanese!
