Lately, I've been posting regularly to a site called Lang8. It's for learning languages, and the basic idea is that you write journal entries or posts in the language you're trying to learn, and native speakers of that language correct your mistakes for you. So, I write in Japanese and correct other people's entries in English. I started feeling a bit silly that I was writing regularly for Japanese people I don't really know, yet leaving my LJ that has my actual friends on it totally barren. So, I decided to start posting those entries here too. In the interest of saving time, I'm going to post the English-commented Japanese here rather than rewriting all of the entries to more normal English.
If you know Japanese, there's not really any need to correct me on these, as they have all been (or will shortly be) heavily corrected by Japanese people already, and the corrections would probably heavily overlap.
Below is the one I just finished writing. Under the cut are a bunch of previous entries.
The Japanese Language Proficiency Test
Yesterday, I took the Japanese Language Proficiency Test (JLPT).
I wasn't that interested in it myself, but my fiancee dragged me into it.
He took the N2 and I took the N1 (the top rank).
The tests were in the same building at the same time, but they were in different rooms.
For practice, we took 3 sample tests.
But, the real test ended up being a bit harder.
Just after I finished the kanji reading and grammar sections of my test, the person next to me folded his arms and laid down his head to sleep.
I was surprised, and thought "he's already done? He must be really fluent."
As I was working on the reading comprehension section, I kept getting distracted by his snoring (and had to reread the passages).
I thought about telling the proctors (the people administering the test) "Excuse me, but this person is distracting me," but the proctors kept passing us as they wandered the room (watching people take the test and making sure no one was cheating), and they didn't say anything to him at all.
I thought, "I guess they don't care if he's sleeping during the test."
e was also a rule prohibiting anyone from leaving the room before the test was over, even if they finished their own test, (so I felt bad about him having to sit and do nothing for half an hour while waiting for the test to be done).
I tried to do my best, but when there were only 5 minutes remaining, I still had 10 or 12 questions left.
Since there was nothing else I could do about it, I filled in the answers at random.
The guy sleeping next to me did bother me, but I know that the real problem was that I couldn't read Japanese fast enough to finish the test in time.
After that, there was a 30 minute break.
I tried to find my fiancee to vent my feelings about the first part of the test, but I couldn't find him.
Later, I learned that we'd been looking for each other on different floors.
After that, there was a listening comprehension section.
Well, at least he can't sleep during this part", I thought to myself.
Each question was played (from speakers) only once, and we had to choose the right answer.
I thought this section was also harder than the practice test, but I did my best.
Eventually, the end of the test that I'd been anxiously awaiting finally arrived. (I was wanting the test to be over, not waiting anxiously to be able to take the test.)
After I left the room, I quickly met up with my fiancee.
His test didn't go well either, but he consoled me.
He said things like, "we both did the best we could" and "it's okay if we don't pass." O
nce we felt better, we went out for a delicious meal of sushi to celebrate our efforts.
We won't know until February whether we passed or failed our tests.
Now I'll go back to studying Japanese!
